CHRISTINA (CATHERINE) SONNER


2-5 CHRISTINA SONNER was the fifth child of Johan Philip and Elizabeth Wendle Sonner. She was born 1768 near Strasburg, Virginia in Shenandoah County. She married Jacob Haas June 10, 1788. The minister was Rev. Simon Haar and the witness was Andrew Summer. Jacob Haas died in Shenandoah County during 1819. The March 10, 1819 issue of the Woodstock Herald states, "Died Sunday last Mr. Jacob Haas, an old worthy inhabitant of this County. He has left a disconsolate number of relatives and friends to mourn his irreparable loss." Jacob was the son of John and Catherine Kelp Hass. Jacob and Christinia lived on Narrow Passage Creek north west of Woodstock. He wrote a will 3 March 1817 which is listed in Shenandoah County Will Book L, page 65. Christinia was still living in 1838 when she sold her dower interest in Jacobs land. John Hass was the administrator of his mother's estate. Settlement of Christinia's estate was noted in Shenandoah County Will Book 3, page 170.

John was the Sheriff of Shenandoah County in the 1850s. He was appointed an Ensign in the Light Infantry of the 1st Battalion, 18th Regiment May 10, 1814. He was one of the men selected March 3, 1834 to solicit funds in the Woodstock area for the Valley Pike. He was appointed trustee for the Woodstock Female Seminary March 13, 1847.

Married by James H. March. Groom was 33, a merchant born and residing in Shenandoah County the son of Isaac and Elizabeth Haas. The bride was 21 born and residing in Shenandoah County. The 1860 census list William as a Mail Carrier for Route 1. William enlisted in Company F of the 10th Virginia Infantry. He was assigned to the Confederate States Mail Service Both buried at the Woodstock Lutheran Church Cemetery Woodstock, VA.. .

William was from Nelson County, VA. son of Charles B. and Martha Hill. Married by J. M. Clymer. The groom was 26, born and residing in Nelson County. The bride was 24 born and residing in Shenandoah County. They were married at Woodstock.

Married at Woodstock by G. H. Martin. The groom was 30, a merchant born Woodstock and residing in Shenandoah County the son of Isaac and Elizabeth Haas. The bride was 22 born at Woodstock and residing in Shenandoah County the daughter of David and Elizabeth Gillock. John was a member of the Imboden's Brigade of the 18th Virginia Cavalry. He was supposed to have been a member of Company D and was a courier for General Robert E. Lee. He later served in the Independent Cavalry. The 18th Virginia Cavalry records indicate that he joined at Berryville, VA. on September 24, 1862. He was captured at Greencastle, Pa. and sent to Fort Delaware on July 7, 1863.

Jacob and Catherine moved to Harrison County Indiana. Jacob established the "Haas Chapel" there. Jacob Haas licensed to preach at Mill creek in April 1831. Catherine was the daughter of Emanuel and Esther Funkhouser Pitmann of Mt. Olive, Shenandoah County, Virginia. Both buried in Haas Cemetery Harrison County Indiana. An entry from Levi Pitman's Diary. "Mar. 30. 1884. Mr. Joseph Stover who is from Harrison County, Ind. came here and took dinner with us. He is well acquainted with my sister, Catherine Haas widow of Jacob Haas and with my brother, Anthony Pitman. He left in the afternoon to go to Strasburg."
